In sunny Val Venosta and in Burgraviato, peasants had always had to fight against drought, and for this purpose special channels for transporting and distributing water were created.
This type of irrigation was adopted for the first time way back in the twelfth century, and probably even earlier. Along the so-called rogge, as these irrigation channels are called in South Tyrol, small routes for maintenance and control were made. The care of these channels required considerable effort and therefore they have been almost completely replaced by modern pipe systems. The canal trails, however, have been preserved for the most part and many have been expanded and transformed into pleasant walks with few slopes. Hikes along these trails are a must, especially in the spring, when nature awakes from its winter slumber, while the mountains are still wrapped in a snowy mantle, and in the fall, with landscapes showing a myriad of colours. Our tips: the rogge of Lagundo and Marlengo.
