Hiking holiday Merano South Tyrol

Walks of pure pleasure

Merano and its surroundings await you with a truly notable variety of well-marked hiking trails, either in the mountains or in the valley: you can go on Merano's Alta via or enjoy the legendary rogge, the routes along the ancient canals of irrigation. The Merano mountain scenery is so faceted and offers such a variety of landscapes that even who is not a fan will fall in love with hiking! Our Marlengo hotel is the ideal starting point for excursions of various difficulties in the surroundings and all over South Tyrol.

The paths of the rogge

In sunny Val Venosta and in Burgraviato, peasants had always had to fight against drought, and for this purpose special channels for transporting and distributing water were created.

This type of irrigation was adopted for the first time way back in the twelfth century, and probably even earlier. Along the so-called rogge, as these irrigation channels are called in South Tyrol, small routes for maintenance and control were made. The care of these channels required considerable effort and therefore they have been almost completely replaced by modern pipe systems. The canal trails, however, have been preserved for the most part and many have been expanded and transformed into pleasant walks with few slopes. Hikes along these trails are a must, especially in the spring, when nature awakes from its winter slumber, while the mountains are still wrapped in a snowy mantle, and in the fall, with landscapes showing a myriad of colours. Our tips: the rogge of Lagundo and Marlengo.

The Tappeiner Walk

Known far beyond South Tyrol's boundaries, the Tappeiner promenade in Merano offers a 6 km trail, characterized by rich Mediterranean vegetation.

It takes its name from the doctor, botanist and anthropologist Franz Tappeiner (1816-1902), who funded its creation. To find out more information and the complete itinerary, click here.
